What is Fuse FM?
Fuse FM is the University of Manchester’s student radio station. We have been on air since 2001 and over 20 years later we broadcast online throughout the academic year from professional quality studios within the Students’ Union.
We are run entirely by student volunteers, led by an elected Station Manager and Deputy Station Manager. With over 30 committee members, 120 presenters, and a brand-new setup, we are proud to offer students entry into the world of broadcast with industry-standard equipment and gold-star support and opportunities. We even like to say that Jack Whitehall began his career in our studios.
You can tune in live to our shows online or explore our website for podcasts, interviews, show recordings, and other prerecorded content. We are also proud to be a leading society for up-and-coming DJs and club nights; you can find details of our events here, too. Otherwise, follow us on Instagram (link) for day-by-day updates.
Our History
Fuse FM had humble beginnings back in July of 2000 when a proposal was accepted by the Student’s Union to create its very own radio station in the Union Basement. For a very short time, we were even called Mint FM (though we changed this very quickly). Fuse FM then went on air for the very first time on the 15th of February at 6 AM, led by Alex Atkinson, our first Station Manager, on 106.2FM, gracing the ears of Manchester with R.E.M – The Great Beyond – our first song broadcast.
Between 2001 – 2011, Fuse FM was broadcast for four weeks in each academic semester (September – October, and February to March.) However, since September 2011, we have moved to broadcasting throughout the academic year, from September to June. We’ve also stopped FM broadcasting, moving our focus to streaming online.
On the 29th of April 2012, we moved to brand new, state-of-the-art studios, on the first floor of Manchester’s Student’s Union, with help from the BBC, the Your Manchester Fund, and the University of Manchester’s Student’s Union. We are proud to have some of the best student radio facilities in the country, including our shiny new Studer Micro.
